For Joel Goodman, numbers are just the beginning. As Chief Investment Officer at The Fiduciary Group, he brings decades of investment experience, deep analytical rigor, and a calm, measured voice to client conversations. But at the heart of it all is a drive to help people make better financial decisions—and live better lives.
"I’ve always been interested in understanding how businesses work," Joel shares. "But ultimately, investing isn’t just about the numbers—it’s about helping people meet their goals."
Joel’s financial journey began in trust services at SunTrust in Atlanta before moving into capital markets research with Legg Mason in Baltimore. While both roles gave him a strong foundation in the industry, Joel felt something was missing.
"Over time, I realized I didn’t want to work in a system where the client wasn’t always the priority," he explains. "That’s what drew me back to Savannah and to The Fiduciary Group in 2003."
TFG offered something different—an approach where fiduciary duty was more than a title. Joel saw the opportunity to work closely with families and serve as a long-term partner in their success.
As CIO, Joel leads the firm’s Investment Committee and oversees the development of TFG’s investment strategy. His team takes a long-term view rooted in diversification, risk management, and alignment with each client’s unique objectives.
"Markets will always move," Joel says. "But our job is to make sure we’re thinking strategically, not reacting emotionally."
He believes a consistent, thoughtful process is key to helping clients navigate uncertainty—and that means focusing on quality investments, long-term fundamentals, and clear communication.
"We’re not chasing trends," he adds. "We’re building portfolios that serve clients today and 10 years from now."
While Joel is known for his deep knowledge of markets and investments, he’s equally committed to supporting clients as a strategic advisor.
"There’s real value in helping people zoom out and connect their investments to their overall plan," he says. "That’s where the human side comes in—listening, educating, and being present through all stages of life."
He’s also a strong advocate for cross-disciplinary collaboration, often working alongside estate attorneys and CPAs to ensure clients receive holistic guidance.
"At the end of the day, this work is about trust," Joel says. "And trust comes from listening and showing up with integrity every single time."
A Savannah native, Joel’s commitment to service extends well beyond his role at The Fiduciary Group. He remains actively involved in community leadership, dedicating time and expertise to local causes that align with his values.
"Giving back has always been important to me," he notes. "Whether it’s helping a family plan for retirement or supporting the community—this work is about making a difference."
His approach to leadership is steady and grounded—never flashy, but always intentional.
"What matters most is doing good work and helping people feel more confident about their future."
